The end of the beginning…

What started twelve weeks ago came to an end this past Saturday! What an amazing ride it has been! I am humbled, honored and blessed to have had the opportunity to be one of Rob’s Big Losers. It has been a journey unlike any other for me, as far as my health is concerned. I have met some amazing people! I have thoroughly enjoyed following the journeys of my fellow RBLs… Gus Edmundson, Jason Day, Tim Bryant, Andrea Huntley, Krisina Satterfield, and Rob Clayborn to name a few. The interesting thing is that I first met Gus, Jason and Tim this past Saturday at the RBL 5K Race.  We had been following each other’s journeys through the blogs and although we had never met face to face, there was instant camaraderie. Even though we were “competitors”, we were also brothers and sisters who had journeyed together over the past 12 weeks. We each arrived at Saturday’s finale having achieved different goals and yet, we were all winners! I love what Rob Dempsey said as he was recognizing those who had the highest % of weight loss. He stated, “Remember, everybody here is a winner! This is not a competition, this is an accomplishment.” Great job to all who started and finished RBL2017! Whether you sprinted, ran, walked or hobbled across the finish line Saturday, you finished! You did it! For that you should be extremely proud!  Congrats to Tim Bryant for being the overall winner! You earned it!

As for me, I am thankful for the journey I have been on over the past twelve weeks, but I am even more thankful for the beautiful partner that I have had journey with me! Jennifer Farr, you are amazing! I am so proud to be your husband. You encouraged and supported me so faithfully through it all, while at the same time, you were hustling and working hard to complete your own journey to health! Way to go babe! I am so proud of how far you’ve come. I am looking forward to continuing our journey together!

Twelve weeks ago it was hard for me to get up and move because of my weight; I basically had no stamina at all! I would breath heavy with every step I took and I was very limited in what I could do.

Today, I am a new person! I can walk without getting winded. I don’t come home from work and collapse in the recliner! I have more energy! I’m sleeping better and I need a wardrobe! How’s that for a twelve week metamorphosis?! I still have a long way to go but I am over halfway to my first milestone of losing 100 pounds (only 37 more to go!) It’s not a matter of “if”, but “when”! That’s the beauty of this competition! If you commit to it and consistently do what the trainers and coaches tell you to do, you will see results, and you will have a change in attitude, heart and body!

I am so thankful for all who have joined with me on this journey.  Through it all I have felt God’s presence and the love & support from countless family and friends. For that I am eternally thankful! This is not the end for me, it is only the beginning!!!

“Look at the nations and watch – and be utterly amazed. For I am going to do something in your days that you would not believe, even if you were told.”Habakkuk 1:5

Life Is 10% What Happens To You & 90% How You React To It!

FARRSide of Life… March 31, 2017…  Over the past 9 weeks, I have lost a total of 48.6 pounds!! I am 1.4 pounds away from losing 50 pounds!! It seems so close, yet so far away! It has been a couple of weeks since my last blog. There are many reasons for this, but I will choose to sum it up with one simple, yet complex word: Life!

When I first started RBL2017, one of my coaches at the amazing GIT YMCA told me that Life will throw me curveballs on this journey. At the time, I was not really interested in hearing about that. I was intent on not letting that happen to me. I was dialed in on the goals, the task and the journey in front of me. For the first seven weeks, I was all-in. I was focused and had found a nice “stride” in my journey to a better me. I created opportunities for balancing exercise, healthy eating and meal prep, all while letting all other life, family and work obligations to simply co-exist.

The past two weeks have been a challenge trying to balance and juggle many of life’s curveballs. Life has handled me instead of me handling life. While my workouts have been inconsistent, my focus, my drive and determination have not. I have simply hit a wall…

Jennifer was the featured interview on His Radio this morning. Her inspiring interview highlighted the very reason we are doing this together: our family! She doesn’t know it, but her words and her story have helped me break through that wall! I have been telling her throughout this journey that when it comes to eating or not eating certain foods, we are making choices. Ultimately, we can have anything, but we choose to eat foods that are healthier and more nutritious.

Chuck Swindoll once said, “Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it!” Today, I choose to take back control of my life, my schedule, my planning and my choices. I will finish this first part of the journey STRONG! I will choose to handle my life in a way that continues to be God-honoring. I will celebrate my 48.6 pounds lost, but I will not settle! God’s still working on me! For that, I am thankful!!!

The Scale Said What?!?!?

Down another 6.2 pounds this week for a total weight loss of 42 pounds in 6 weeks! WOW!!! I couldn’t believe it… I had to step off and step back on just to make sure it wasn’t trying to prank me.

Every Friday morning I go to my cardiologist’s office to weigh in. It keeps me from checking my weight hourly at the YMCA and it gives me another level of accountability. I take a picture of my weight every week and send to my trainer at the GIT YMCA. I have every picture, dating back to my initial weigh in on Jan. 27.

This week, in particular, has probably been one of my more exciting weigh-ins. After last week, I was at 35.8 pounds lost. I wanted to see at least a 40 pound weight loss at the six week mark, so I set a goal to push a little bit harder and row, walk, ride, swim a little bit further in order to be at 40+ pounds total loss by the end of this week! This is the first week that I set a short-term goal for myself and it feels so great to have actually achieved it!

I am at a point in the competition where the “water weight”, as they say, is gone. When I lose weight now, I am losing fat! I am burning fat! I am shedding fat! That’s why this week’s weigh-in was so meaningful. Nothing comes easy. Hard work pays off! Lesson learned! 🙂

For those of you wondering, I am still maintaining a 1200-1400 calorie/day diet. I still have not had any red meat or fried food since January 26. I am still drinking 140-180 ounces of water/day and I feel fine!!!  #RBL2017  #LosingIsWinning

One way to eat healthy… it’s working for us

IMG_4017

This entire tray of shrimp totals less than 350 calories and is enough protein for 4 people! A little olive oil and some Mrs Dash and this shrimp went from freezer to plate in less than 20 minutes. I’m telling you, the NuWave Oven is one of the best pieces of equipment to own if you have a busy lifestyle and you want to eat right! It has become a staple in our home!! We have used it to prepare fish (tilapia, founder, salmon, shrimp), porkchops, veggies and turkey bacon! You can take meats from freezer to plate in less than 20 minutes in most cases, therefore eliminating the need to lay something out to thaw the night before. It has definitely been a game changer for us!!

Week 5 Finished! Another Losing Week…

Yesterday was the conclusion of week 5 for RBL2017! It was another losing week for me as I was blessed to lose another 4 lbs this week for a total weight loss of 35.8 pounds in 5 weeks. I cannot be more thrilled with the results and with how I am feeling!

Let me talk to my former self for just a minute, in the hopes that someone reading this may be where I was… I used to think that going to the gym was only for “fit” people and for people who knew how to operate gym equipment and what exercises to do for different body parts, etc… I assumed that because I didn’t know what to do that I would look “stupid” or “dumb” and that people would make fun of the large, overweight guy! Could I have been further from the truth?

There are two great things about the Greenville County YMCA: the people and the program. The people are so supportive and encouraging. They will go out of their way to help you and explain things to you, and I’m not just talking about the staff. The program (ActivTrax) is top notch and so easy to follow. Everyday it gives you a new workout to follow. And if you are like me and need visual instructions, well there are those, too! For every machine and workout, there is a video showing you how to do it. I have witnessed not only my life being changed, but over the past several weeks, I have seen new people come into the YMCA looking for help and they are receiving it, just like I am.

Maybe you would like to take control of your life and your health. I would highly recommend a visit to your local area YMCA. All you have to do is show up and initiate the conversation… they will take it from there and can get you on the road to better health, better living, and a better you! Don’t try this journey alone!

Week 4 complete & another 6.8 pounds gone!!!

FARRSide of Life… Friday, February 24… What a great week it has been! To give you the summary, I am down another 6.8 pounds for a total weight loss of 31.8 pounds in 4 weeks!!! I am still maintaining a diet of 1200-1400 calories a day and I drink over 140-160 ounces of water every day! “WoW!” is about all I can say about that! Not that I am doing anything, but I am just overly humbled by what God is doing IN me! He is waking me up at 4:21 a.m. every morning to go workout. He is giving me the will power to say, “no” to food temptations! He has helped me thrive on water & white meat these past four weeks!! 😉

I realized this week that I have not eaten fried food in four weeks! I have also not had any red meat in four weeks! And to be honest, I haven’t missed the food! I have missed the convenience of making/buying those foods, but I haven’t missed the food. I am also seeing other results in the gym as well. For instance, when I started rowing, my best 20 minute-row took me 3,000 meters. This morning, two weeks later, I’m up to 3500 meters in 20-minutes! “Winner! Winner! Grilled Chicken Dinner!”

I tell you these things, not to shine a light on me, but to shine a huge spotlight on God! My journey is really not about me, nor is it about me getting healthy! That’s a huge “benefit” and a awesome “side-effect”!  My journey is ultimately so I can point people to the greatness and awesomeness of God! He created me to bring glory and attention to Him.

I hope and pray that through all of this, you don’t see me, but you see God in me! He is my source of strength and my source of hope! Is he yours?

Down 25 pounds in 3 weeks!!!

FarrSide of Life… Friday, February 17… So blessed to lose 5.4 pounds this week for a total weight loss of 25 pounds in 3 weeks! This week I averaged eating 1276 calories/day and drinking 113 ounces of water/day. And, thanks to two wonderful new friends at church, I have now added Coconut Milk to my diet. I won’t drink it plain because I just don’t drink milk, but it is great in cereal and oatmeal and it is so healthy!

This wasn’t my best week for working out! I started the week strong, especially since I was able to add Rowing to my daily routine. Last Saturday, I was able to row 3,000 meters in 20 minutes! For me, that’s huge!! Since then, I have been ending my ActivTrax workout with a 10-15 minute/1500 meter row. I am loving the cardio workout that comes from rowing! I can definitely feel my whole body working harder when I row, versus when I walk on the treadmill.

Like I said earlier, I started the week strong, but ended the week not so much. I had been fighting a sore throat for a few days and tried to work through it and “sweat it out”! It was to no avail as Strep Throat hit me hard on Wednesday. It put me down for three days. I really did miss going to the YMCA each day. But I continued to eat a healthy diet and just tried to get up and move as much as possible. Feeling stronger today than yesterday. Will definitely be back at the GIT YMCA tomorrow to start week 4!

Stay Faithful  RBL Friends! Be Strong & Courageous!

There’s More Holes in My Belt & I Love Rowing!!!

FarrSide of Life (February 10, 2017)… Week 2 is done and I am down another 4.8 pounds, for a total weight loss of 19.6 pounds in two weeks! Wow!! Happy Dance time!!!  I already feel so much better and so much stronger. I definitely have more energy than I did two weeks ago. My belt even has more holes in it than it did two weeks ago!! 🙂

During week 2 I averaged eating 1,358 calories and drinking 160 ounces of water per day. Eating right and drinking only water is really making a huge difference in my energy level and how I feel throughout the day. It’s the only explanation for physically being able to get up at 4:30 a.m. everyday Monday – Friday to go workout! I am getting stronger. I can feel it!

During this morning’s workout I tried rowing as a different cardio exercise. I LOVED IT!! I was able to knock out 1,000 meters in only 7 minutes. (I was only going to try and do 400 meters to start, but once I got into it, I was motivated). I know that’s not much for some, but for me it’s huge!  I plan to add it to my workout everyday next week to really ramp up my cardio training, so if you see me and I’m humming the tune of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat, Gently Down the Stream…” please don’t think I’ve lost it. 😉

Until next week, let me leave you with this thought… God is never reluctant to receive us in Jesus’ name. There is never a time when you cannot come to God, through faith in Jesus’ sacrifice on your behalf, and find love and forgiveness. God sent Jesus to take our place on the cross so that He could receive us day after day, time after time, moment by moment throughout our lives. People have asked me, “How can you get up so early everyday to workout?” or “How can you drink so much water?” The answer, to me, is simple… It’s not me, it’s God! Galatians 2:20 tells me that, “I have been CRUCIFIED WITH CHRIST; it is no longer I who live, but CHRIST WHO LIVES IN ME; and the life which I now live in the flesh I LIVE BY FAITH in the SON OF GOD who loved me and GAVE HIMSELF FOR ME.”

Thank you to so many who continue to pray and support Jennifer and me! Your prayers, texts, calls, e-mails and posts are so encouraging and uplifting. We see them all and we read every single one of them. We could not do this without you!! Please keep them coming.

“Try not! Do or Do not! There is no try!”

I am absolutely loving the workouts that ActivTrax is giving me. It’s a new workout everyday! Since my first full workout on January 30, I have worked out for eight consecutive weekdays using the ActivTrax plan and I have yet to repeat a workout! It is so good at targeting different muscle groups each day. I am feeling so much better after my early morning workouts (5am everyday!!!). I am having more energy and more stamina, two things I was severely lacking. When it comes to working out everyday and eating right every meal and every snack, what I have found works best for me is to stay the course… remain consistent as much as possible and to plan ahead, plan ahead, and plan ahead!

I know that sounds easier said than done, and it sometimes is, but I have discovered that when I prepare in advance to go to the gym to workout, I go. When I plan ahead for healthy meals & snacks, I eat healthy! We live a very busy & hectic lifestyle, while balancing many things between work, church, kids, school, dance, etc… It would be so easy to “try to make it to the gym” or “try to eat healthy” but that wouldn’t amount to much and it would surely end in failure! After all, my life up until this point has been full of “trying”. What is it that Yoda tells Luke Skywalker in Star Wars, “Try not! Do or do not! There is no try!”

I am officially breaking up with the word, “try”!

Week 1 Complete -YES!!!

FarrSide of Life…Friday, Feb 3… Today is my first official weigh-in day…

These last 7 days have been life-changing for us. We have totally changed our lifestyle: the way we eat, the way we drink, the way we sleep, the way we move! It has been a challenge just because life, in general, is a challenge when you are balancing family, home, work, church, school, dance, etc… but overcoming those challenges is so rewarding when you step on the scale and see that your hard work is paying off!!

I am humbled and blessed to share with you that I have lost 15 pounds since last Friday!! Yeah, I couldn’t believe it either, but I have the pictures to prove it. 😁. I worked out everyday this week! I ate an average of 1722 calories each day! I drank an average of 132 oz of water each day. And I feel great!!!

It’s amazing how well your body responds to workouts when you are feeding it and nourishing it the right way.  I wanted to get this journey started off with eating the right foods, the right proteins, fruit and vegetables, and understanding how to make good, solid food choices that will sustain me throughout the day! I know I may not see these results every week but this is the start that I needed on this journey. I had to be all-in from the beginning or I would risk not finishing what God has allowed me to start.

How about you? Are you struggling with something that God has called you to and you don’t know what to do? It doesn’t have to be weight loss, it could be anything… God is constantly calling each of us to new adventures and new opportunities that are available inside His will for our lives. The only way to truly succeed in any place, or in any situation, is by looking to God for direction and obeying his Word. When you follow God, you will find that you will prosper, no matter what you are called to do. Check out Joshua 1:1-9 in your Bible. This may serve as your motivation to let go, and let God do something great in your life today!!

If  I can be of any help or encouragement to you, please reach out to me. I have so many people helping me,  encouraging me and motivating me.  I want to pay it forward…

I hope and pray you have a GREAT and wonderful weekend. Blessings!!
